BEAUTIFUL DISASTERS

CONNY MAIER AT LANGEN FOUNDATION

From September 3, 2023 to April 7, 2024, the Langen Foundation will present Conny Maier’s first comprehensive institutional exhibition.

Curated by Udo Kittelmann, Beautiful Disasters both created especially for this exhibition and earlier works by the artist on the site of the former NATO missile station near Neuss.

The painterly work of Conny Maier impresses with bold and bizarre pictorial designs of theLife beyond the ordinary and expectable. Her large-scale paintings reflect the polarities of dominance and submission, balance and instability, and that Human and non-human. In Beautiful Disasters, Maier answers questions from the excessiveness and the fundamental distrust of reason in the 21st century with rigorously colored answers. Figures with gaping mouths and gelatinous feet, often with multiple breasts and grotesque headgear, wander in lively, sweeping brushstrokes on their canvases. The compositions oscillate between Fascination and revulsion and beauty and horror. Maier’s abstractions offer one unsparing view of the end of the Holocene. The artist not only asks what should come to an end, but also what a new day could dawn.
