Air Guitar Chris Succo

Ruttkoski;68 presents Air Guitar, Chris Succo’s first solo exhibition with the gallery in Düsseldorf.

The centrepiece of Succo’s artistic practice is painting, which is nevertheless constantly being expanded to include photography, sculpture and installation elements. While in terms of formal aesthetics the visual language is clearly rooted in the tradition of abstract expressionism, the works are imbued with personal experiences and draw on influences from both sub- and popular cultures.

After Succo completely banished colour from his paintings in the last series, it now returns with full force in the Connecticut Paintings. The newly created works are based on intensive research into colour, which the painter devoted himself to during a residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut. Together, the paintings combine almost the entire range of colours. Far away from everyday life and everything familiar, surrounded by pristine nature, an organic colour palette has been created that has – consciously or unconsciously – absorbed its surroundings. The impasto compositions, made up of overlapping areas of colour and complex networks of lines that seem to oscillate between control and its loss, immerse the viewer in the dazzling colours of a sunrise or the restless play of light under a canopy of leaves.
