Faux Raccord Pablo Tomek

Bochum 2025/06/08 2025/09/07

Pablo Tomek returns to Germany with a new body of work in Bochum, expanding on the ideas introduced in his schlass series. His paintings, rooted in trompe-l’œil, play with notions of the unfinished, drawing on the gestures and corrections of laborers while referencing modernist icons like mondrian and duchamp. These works blend abstraction and raw materiality, creating a dynamic exchange between the real and the imagined. The artist transforms overlooked or utilitarian forms into poetic compositions. His canvases suggest infinite possibilities, like puzzles that resist final resolution.

In Bochum, where Jacob Meyer once cast steel bells in molds of sand and clay, Tomek continues this legacy of transforming fragile matter into enduring form. His schlass sculptures push painting into three dimensions, blending studio furniture, urban architecture, and playful abstraction.

These hybrid forms—part sacred structure, part bus shelter—blur the line between object and space. Their deceptive materiality invites viewers to question what is real and what is illusion. Like Meyer’s bells, tomek’s sculptures resonate beyond their surfaces, reclaiming the world through imagination and form.

“And it is with these walls and colors as with the sound of bells; in their beating you will find every sound and every word your imagination desires.”
— Leonardo da Vinci

In Bochum today, there are bells, walls, and colors.
